
Youth Awards
The Garden Club of Illinois (GCI) is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of gardeners, conservationists, and environmental stewards. Through hands-on projects, creative contests, and grant opportunities, GCI supports youth of all ages in exploring the natural world and developing a lifelong appreciation for gardening and sustainability.
Youth Grants
GCI offers grants to support youth gardening and environmental education projects throughout Illinois. Schools, youth groups, and community organizations are encouraged to apply for funding to help children and teens engage in meaningful outdoor learning experiences.
Eligible projects include, but are not limited to:

School or community gardens

Pollinator habitats and native plantings

Conservation and recycling programs

Outdoor classrooms and habitat restoration
Applications:
Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis and should include a brief project description, timeline, budget, and sponsoring club information. Each group is eligible for one grant per calendar year.

National Garden Clubs Youth Contests
Each year, the National Garden Clubs (NGC) offers exciting youth contests to encourage creativity and environmental awareness. Illinois youth are invited to participate through the Garden Club of Illinois.
Available contests include:
🌻 Poster Contests – Celebrate pollinators, conservation, and environmental themes through original artwork.
✏️ Poetry Contests – Express a love of nature through poetry aligned with the annual theme.
📷 Photography Contests – Capture the beauty of gardens, wildlife, and conservation projects.
🌿 Sculpture Contest – Create recycled or repurposed material sculptures promoting sustainability.
📖 Smokey Bear & Woodsy Owl Poster Contest – For younger children, encouraging wildfire prevention and care for the environment.
Submission Deadlines and Guidelines
The deadline for submission for all of the above contests is January 20, 2026.
All entries from Illinois youth must be submitted through the Garden Club of Illinois Youth Chair.
